England rugby head coach Eddie Jones delays naming the side to play Fiji on Saturday because of injury concerns

Eddie Jones has delayed naming his England team to play Fiji until Friday due to fitness concerns over a number of players.

Billy Vunipola, Nathan Hughes and Elliot Daly are all carrying knocks sustained in last Saturday's victory over South Africa and the England head coach is "looking to see how they resolve themselves over the next 24 hours".

"We're prepared for what's going to be a difficult game but we've had really good preparation, albeit a few injury concerns which we're trying to sort out at the moment," said Jones.

"We'll announce the team on Friday, which is a deviation from our normal procedure but in line with the regulation of team announcements."

The delay led to criticism that England had broken rules by not naming their team 48 hours before kick-off, but World Rugby confirmed those regulations do not come into effect until January.

And Jones was sure he was doing nothing wrong as he added: "I don't have to discuss it with Fiji. There's no regulation. We didn't ask them to name it 48 hours before. There is no regulation. There is no etiquette.

"In normal circumstances, you want to name it 48 hours before because that it is in line with World Cup regulations and that's good practice.

"But unusual circumstances, and the regulations allow this, mean that you can do it at another time so we're happy to do it at another time.

"I don't think there is any advantage in it. We're not looking for an advantage. There are some serious injury concerns that we have."

Vunipola, who suffered an upper body injury against the Springboks, missed England training on Thursday morning along with Mike Brown and Jonny May. The trio worked on their fitness in the indoor facilities at Pennyhill Park.

May travelled with the squad to their hotel but should the Gloucester wing miss out, Elliot Daly is expected to switch from centre to the left wing with Jonathan Joseph wearing the No 13 shirt.

Wasps No 8 Hughes, who was born in Fiji, was due to make his full England debut on Saturday but Tom Wood could be now retained at openside flanker after being recalled to the squad.
