Eddie Jones has told Sky Sports News HQ that he was impressed with England's emphatic win over Italy at the weekend

Eddie Jones has told Danny Cipriani only performances and not "headlines about changing clubs" will earn him an England recall.

Cipriani is returning to Wasps from Sale Sharks at the end of the season in a move Sharks boss Steve Diamond believes is designed to revive his England career.

Diamond has called the fly-half's reasoning "misguided", and now Jones has made it clear there is only one route back for the 28-year-old.

"At the moment, Danny's underneath George Ford and Owen Farrell," the England coach told Sky Sports News HQ.

"He's just got to keep playing well. It's not about headlines about changing clubs, it's about playing good Test-match rugby at club level.

"If he does that, he's going to win his team a lot of games, and that puts him in a better position."

Jones later widened his advice to include all England hopefuls, saying: "It's up to the players. If they want to play Test rugby, they have to work out what they have to do.

"This isn't a kindergarten class. If you want to play Test rugby, you have to work hard to do it yourself. We'll give them all the guidance they need, but they've got to do it."

England have won both Six Nations games under new boss Jones, whose training camp this week contains just one player not in the matchday 23 for Sunday's win in Italy.

Paul Hill and Maro Itoje made their debuts off the bench in Rome, and Jones said: "Young Hill at tighthead - what a debut for a 20-year-old.

"Itoje's the people's favourite - everyone loves him -  and he did well. He's going to be a big player, we've just got to take him slowly, step by step."

Jones could soon have Leicester's Manu Tuilagi available and plans to watch the centre's latest comeback when Leicester visit Harlequins on Friday night.

Tuilagi has not played for England since 2014 and injured a hamstring last month shortly after returning from a long-term groin problem.

Jones said: "I'll wander out to The Stoop on Friday and have a bit of a look to see how he's going."
