Worcester Warriors have signed veteran Ireland scrum-half Peter Stringer on a short-term deal, as cover for Francois Hougaard.

The 39-year-old, who has 98 Ireland caps, arrives at Sixways on a six-month deal ahead of the new season with first-choice number nine Hougaard set to be away with South Africa during the autumn.

Stringer, who's won a Six Nations Grand Slam and three Triple Crowns with Ireland, left Sale Sharks after his contract expired at the end of last season.

He said: "I'm feeling as fit and ready as ever and am genuinely excited about getting back on the field as I feel I still have plenty to offer."

After an illustrious 15-year career with Munster, Stringer had loan spells with Saracens and Newcastle before sealing a move to Bath in 2013.

After two years and 62 appearances at the West Country club, Stringer joined Sale where he was voted player of the season in 2015/16.

Worcester director of rugby Gary Gold said: "He's in incredible physical shape for someone of 39 years of age, and he is an outstanding role model for our younger players."
