Wasps flanker James Haskell might not play until the start of 2017 as the toe injury he suffered on England's summer tour requires surgery.

Haskell suffered the injury during the second Test win over Australia in Melbourne and was unable to play any part in the finale as England completed their historic 3-0 series whitewash.

Scans have revealed the severity of the injury and Haskell's toe will need reconstructive surgery, ruling him out for four to six months.

Even a return at the shorter end of that absence would most likely rule Haskell out of England's autumn internationals against South Africa, Fiji, Argentina and Australia - those matches start on November 12 and conclude on December 3.

James Haskell put in 18 tackles against Australia to help England to an impressive 39-28 victory in the first test in Brisbane.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young said: "We're all really disappointed for James and we are all wishing him a speedy recovery.

"James' performances with England, both in the 3-0 series win over Australia and in England's Six Nations Grand Slam success, have been hugely impressive.

"Everyone at Wasps knows how hard James works to make those performances happen, and we know he'll be working just as hard to come back in the best shape possible.

"Our medical team will be working closely with James over the next few months to get him back to full fitness and in the meantime there will be a good opportunity for the other back row players we have at the club to stake a claim."
