The seventh staging of rugby's World Cup Sevens will be held in San Francisco in July 2018.
The three-day tournament will be played at the city's baseball stadium, AT&T Park, which has a 42,000-capacity.
Home of the San Francisco Giants, the arena will host a tournament featuring 24 men's teams and 16 women's.
World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said the move to the United States will help the game grow globally.
In Brazil last year, rugby sevens made its Olympic Games debut and Beaumont said: "On the back of Rio, we feel that sevens will just get stronger and stronger."
He also explained that sevens, rather than the traditional 15-a-side format, may be the best way to spearhead rugby's expansion but admitted it was "not for us to tell local unions how they run their operations."
