Wales stalwart Alun Wyn Jones will sit out Saturday's game against Australia following the death of his father.

Jones, a 31-year-old lock forward, has been capped over 100 times by his country and had been in line to skipper the side because regular captain Sam Warburton is recovering from injury.

A Welsh Rugby Union statement read: "The thoughts and prayers of the WRU and the National Squad are with Alun Wyn Jones and his family following the passing of his father Tim.

"Due to this, Alun Wyn will not be considered for selection this weekend."

Jones' father, Tim, was a lawyer who played rugby in the back row for Swansea, after representing Welsh Universities.

Swansea chairman Terry Morgan told the Western Mail: "Tim and I played together from the late '60s toward the end of my playing days, and he was an ever-present personality with the All Whites Former Players' Association from its inception in 1981, around the time he finished playing.

"He is remembered for his dry wit and sense of fun, as well as the enormous support he unassumingly gave behind the scenes to Swansea Rugby Club from his experience in the legal world.

"His footprint on the club is, like his father, Ken - a great supporter - and his son Alun Wyn Jones, indelible. We will miss him."

Wales will name their team on Thursday ahead of their bid for a first win in 12 Tests against Australia.

Prop Gethin Jenkins is now the favourite to captain the side under interim head coach Rob Howley.

Full-back Liam Williams is the biggest injury concern after he was hurt during Scarlets' European Champions Cup defeat at Saracens 10 days ago.

Leigh Halfpenny, pencilled in for a wing slot, is expected to start at full-back if Williams does not recover in time, with Hallam Amos or Alex Cuthbert then being called into the starting XV.
