South Africa No 8 Duane Vermeulen has been ruled out of the decisive final Test against Ireland.
Vermeulen injured his elbow in the first half of the second Test on Saturday in Johannesburg, which South Africa won 32-26 to level the series.
The 29-year-old veteran of 37 Tests was replaced at half-time by Warren Whiteley but the South African Rugby Union (SARU) confirmed on Monday he has been ruled out of this weekend's third Test at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
"Duane went for x-rays on Monday, which revealed a grade two tear in the elbow," said team doctor Konrad von Hagen.
"He will be out for between two to six weeks, depending on how the injury responds to treatment."
No replacement will be called up despite Whiteley suffering a shoulder injury in the same game. He participated in Monday's training but did not get involved in any contact drills.
Already, the Springboks will be without fly-half Pat Lambie, who was still showing signs of concussion after being knocked out in the first Test in an aerial collision with Irish flanker CJ Stander.
Centre Damian de Allende sat out training because of a stomach bug and prop Trevor Nyakane has a sore ankle which will be assessed again on Tuesday, SARU said.
