Scotland will be without prop Willem Nel for the entire Six Nations because of a neck injury.
Nel was named in Vern Cotter's 37-man squad on Wednesday, although his selection was left resting on results of a scan on an injury he suffered while playing for Edinburgh last week.
The South Africa-born front-rower was hurt in a collision while playing against Harlequins in the European Challenge Cup.
A statement read: "An MRI scan on Wednesday Spire Murrayfield Hospital revealed that the tight-head prop damaged an intervertebral disc in his neck during a significant collision at the Twickenham Stoop.
"Nel will now have a second specialist assessment on January 23 to consider his programme of recovery, including whether corrective surgery is required."
Scotland open their Six Nations campaign against Ireland at Murrayfield on February 4.
