        Verdict

        Mansfield won here in September but that was his only all-weather victory in 16 starts. Blackcurrent gained his first success in 19 starts at Newcastle last month and is only 2lb higher but it's about time FIRST EXCEL was winning again. He's better known for his exploits at Southwell, where he's won three times, but he's also scored at Newcastle so the surface won't be a problem and he's been leading at this trip when tackling 6f. Bluella, who didn't run badly when fourth here on Saturday, is 1-26 and usually runs at Southwell while course winner Arnoul Of Metz hasn't run since October 2019.
