Verdict

In a tricky race, we will opt for Paxford Jack, but among others to consider are Almost Broke, Hiers de Brouage and Saucy Night. Almost Broke won from a 10lb-lower mark at Chepstow two runs ago, but had his colours lowered here last time although that was over a longer trip. Burwood Breeze is very consistent, even though he has been raised two pounds for getting beaten last time. Jardin de Beaulieu remains five pounds above the mark from which he won last January. Paxford Jack is now two pounds below a winning mark, something that certainly means he has to looked at here. Saffron Sun is actually six pounds below a winning rating but, as you can imagine, recent efforts are not so good. Course and distance winner Hiers de Brouage is only four pounds above a winning mark, while Giacomo has disappointed since a very promising novice season in 2003. Gotham has yet to transfer promising hurdling form to fences, and Barton May and Saucy Night have to improve on their bare form so far, but they are both winners and the latter could well show up today in this race. In what is not a straightforward race to assess, a narrow vote goes to Paxford Jack.
