Verdict

We jump from one end of the spectrum to the other here, moving from discussing Irish Derby runners in the opener to plating-class old-timers, but something has to win it and we row in with Champion Lion ahead of Scotty's Future and Soviet Joy. Champion Lion's only success to date came in a Kempton maiden in 2002 off a mark of 87, and since then he has struggled to find another opportunity. However, he has flattered on a couple of occasions lately, and indeed went close on the all-weather track here a week ago when only running out of steam with a furlong to go. The drop back in trip should help then and he is the pick in a very poor race. Scotty's Future won Ascot's Victoria Cup in 2002 but is very much a shadow of his former self and has been reduced to competing at this level without success so far this year. On old form he would have a squeak but cannot be relied on, while of the rest, only Soviet Joy makes any appeal as he is the most unexposed. Bets should be kept to the absolute minimum, with Champion Lion the pick.
