Last year's winner Opinion Poll was the first favourite to oblige in ten years. Times Up, Askar Tau and Ley Hunter were behind that night with the former doing much the better in fourth. He ended the campaign with two Group 2 victories, both with HIGH JINX just behind, and is penalised as a consequence. The runner-up is given the nod on these better terms but Cavalryman looks held on their Lonsdale Cup run and though Colour Vision escapes a penalty for his Gold Cup success he now looks as though he needs an even longer trip than this. Gloomy Sunday arrives from France but her overall form leaves plenty to be desired and the others will need to improve.
