In depth

Verdict

Desire To Excel showed enough on his debut to make him the one to beat here; the list of alternatives is headed by Sun Ship and The Desert Saint. Paul Cole has had a good start to the season and this colt cost 150,000gns and he showed plenty of speed on his debut. He should come on for that run and he sets the standard. Sun Ship showed plenty of promise on his debut but he failed to build on that last time at Ascot when he looked a little one-paced. He may do better over an extra furlong and he looks worth taking on today. The Desert Saint hails from a successful family and he made a pleasing introduction to the racecourse when he was second behind Shampagne at Kempton. He should win races and he could be one to stay on the right side of this season. Richard Hannon's Penny's Gift is worth noting in the market on her racecourse bow, but a safer bet looks to be Desire To Excel who gets our pick.
