      In depth

      Verdict

Salouen nearly caused an upset when pushing a below-par Cracksman all the way to the line in the Coronation Cup. It remains to be seen if he can reproduce that effort and there looks to be more to come from CORONET this season having made a winning reappearance in the Group 2 Middleton Stakes at York last month - this isn’t the strongest of Group 1 contests. Placed at the highest level last year, John Gosden’s filly will need to reverse running at Ascot in October with runner-up Bateel and the latter makes most appeal of the home challenge having also made a winning return over 1m2f here recently. Waldgeist arrives in good form and finished well ahead of stablemate Cloth Of Stars at Chantilly last time, though he found today’s German raiders Guignol and Iquitos too good in a Group 1 race at Munich in November. Oriental Eagle is a third German runner but has plenty to find with Iquitos on recent form
