LOGICIAN has raced just the three times since winning the 2019 St Leger but he’ll be sharper for last month’s pipe-opener in a Group 3 at Newbury and today’s fast ground will be to his liking. Desert Encounter finished ahead of Winter Reprise when runner-up in Listed company at Goodwood earlier this term but would prefer some cut and Pablo Escobarr is preferred having been beaten less than a length in last year’s renewal. The prevailing ground is also a worry for the returning Max Vega while Outbox is upped in class and Mrs Hyde has even more to find.
Desert Encounter (IRE) 25-1 (9-0) Held up last, pushed along over 2f out, switched left and plugged on in modest 5th from over 1f out, never a threat, 5th of 6, 4 1/2l behind Love (8-11) at Ascot 1m 2f Grp 1 stks (1) gf in Jun.
Logician 15-8 (9-0) Held up towards rear, niggled along and disputed lead over 4f out, came under pressure over 2f out, lost position over 1f out, weakened inside final furlong, 3rd of 5, 5 1/2l behind Al Aasy (9-3) at Newbury 1m 4f Grp 3 stks (1) gs in May.
Outbox 85-40 (9-11) Tracked leader, led entering final 3f, ridden and headed approaching final furlong, stayed on, 2nd of 5, 1l behind Highest Ground (9-7) at Leicester 1m 4f stks (3) gf in Jun.
Pablo Escobarr (IRE) 10-1 (9-1) Tracked leaders, weakening when hampered over 2f out, last of 5, 14 3/4l behind Sir Ron Priestley (9-1) at Newmarket 1m 4f Grp 2 stks (1) gf in May.
Winter Reprise (FR) 17-2 (9-1) Stumbled badly leaving stalls, led after 1f, ridden and hung left inside final 2f, headed over 1f out, no chance with winner when dropped to 3rd inside final furlong, 3rd of 4, 5l behind Stormy Antarctic (9-1) at Goodwood 1m 2f lst stks (1) sft in May.
