In depth

Verdict

Ganges and Soviet Courage share the same handicap mark of 76 and set the standard. But one of the less-exposed types can improve past them and that one could be LONG CROSS. He was a fair fourth behind Saab Almanal, rated 95, in a Newbury maiden on debut and normal progress should see him off the mark. Lingfield third Lake Alfred could also figure ahead of stablemate and newcomer Peril, while Freemason is another likely improver to keep a watchful eye on.
