Pat Haslam always has to be reckoned with in these contests but his representative Dennick looks moderate at best so far and preference is for the hurdling newcomer Renada, who gets the vote ahead of Rossin Gold. The last mentioned should improve for his first start over hurdles at Haydock in a better race than this earlier this month and cannot be discounted, while Verstone has shown promise in all three starts to date and is entitled to be thereabouts again. Swell Lad was arguable the best of these on the flat but he lost his way on the level and may be best watched at present. Similar comments apply to Firmount and a better bet may be Renada, who improved with each outing on the flat for Howard Johnson and is sure to have been well schooled for his debut over timber.
