Verdict

David Simcock has won this for the past two years and Desert Encounter has the call here on official figures. His third behind Ulysses in the Eclipse is the best recent form on view though he was beaten narrowly by Second Step in an Ascot Listed contest earlier when conceding 3lb so there's nothing between that pair. Secret Number is joint top-rated but has to concede weight all round due to winning a Group 2 in Turkey three weeks ago. Fabricate is in the form of his life having completed a double with a Group 3 victory at Windsor, though he had no answer to Dylan Mouth in a Haydock handicap earlier when receiving 9lb. The latter had a tremendous record in Italy and is just finding his feet with Marco Botti so should go well. ACROSS THE STARS hasn't always looked a comfortable ride and didn't get going until too late at Chester. Last year's King Edward VII Stakes winner is still a work in progress and will need to be at his best but a chance is taken that he can produce the goods here.
