A hot maiden on paper but, having saddled last year's winner, John Gosden will be hoping that OBSIDIAN will be smart enough to deliver on his first racecourse start. The trainer certainly should know the family well as he is a half-brother to Listed winner Fencing. The Cecils have had plenty of success in this race over the years, though Tacticus needs to step up markedly on his recent outing at Thirsk. Mooharrib and Connecticut ran better races on debut than their odds may have implied, while any market confidence behind the smartly-bred pair New Story and Rembrandt Van Rijn should not be ignored. Smiling Stranger shaped with plenty of promise on debut and, as the winner has gone on to be second in an Oaks trial at Lingfield, that line of form appears particularly strong.
