In depth

Verdict

There may only be four runners in this but it’s possibly the most interesting race on the card. Mahlervous made giant strides over hurdles last season, winning at Kelso and Ayr, but hasn’t run since April. Irish Roe would have probably been the pick of these over the smaller obstacles with Peter Atkinson’s mare is going chasing late in life. I’M TO BLAME (NAP) is the only one with experience over fences and he’s been a bit unlucky so far, finishing second at Carlisle and Newcastle. This represents a good opportunity as Dr Hooves has undergone wind surgery since last seen in June.

Mahlervous (IRE) 10-1 (11-2) Close up, joined leader 6th, every chance from 3 out, led just after last, ran on well, won at Ayr 2m 5f hcp (2) gd in Apr beating Solomon Grey (11-11) by 1 3/4l, 8 ran.

Irish Roe (IRE) 3-1fav (11-11) With leader, led narrowly 4th, strongly pressed from 3 out, ridden and headed approaching the last, stayed on same pace run-in, no chance with winner, 2nd of 8, 3 1/2l behind Blu Cavalier (11-12) at Doncaster 2m 1f hcp (2) sft in Dec.
