Verdict

The Winter Derby is proving a good trial race for this contest and Master The World and Mr Owen fought out the finish of the latter event here last month. The former was awarded the race having been impeded by Mr Owen, who passed the post first, and it will be another close call if David Simcock’s charge steers a straight course this time. Battle Of Marathon finished third in the Winter Derby with Petite Jack and UTMOST further behind with the latter engulfed inside the final furlong after setting the pace. Still unexposed, the Gosden colt may well find further improvement today and had beaten Victory Bond over track and trip earlier. He gets a tentative vote as Star Archer also has scope for progress despite failing to land a hat-trick when third at Kempton last time and is preferred to Abe Lincoln, Pactolus and Battalion.
