In depth

Verdict

Esprit Saint has Brumous to beat, with Bohemian Boy best of the remainder. Esprit Saint was successful over hurdles on his final start in France 12-months ago, but has been out of luck since joining Alan King, having been sent off favourite on each of his three outings over fences. He may well still be getting the hang of things though, and to be fair, it was only up the demanding Towcester hill that he gave best to main rival Quirino on his latest start. The latter is very highly rated by connections, and as the selection meets nothing of that calibre here, he should at last get his head in front. Brumous won over hurdles here over 12-months ago, and was in need of the run when a poor fifth of seven on his chase debut at Hereford recently. He will strip fitter, but needs to improve to trouble the selection. Bohemian Boy was put firmly in his place by New Little Bric at Exeter the time before last, and he too has it to do. He may be no world beater just yet, but Esprit Saint should be too good for his four rivals on this occasion.
