MAKING MIRACLES (NAP) looked sure to win a competitive handicap at York last week when hitting the front inside the final furlong but he couldn’t quite hold the late rally of stablemate and market rival Baghdad. The step up in trip that day clearly suited and, as he races off the same mark, Mark Johnston’s gelding can finally open his account. Mt Augustus went close on his final start last year and his dam stayed 1m4f so he rates a danger. Dubai Empire was third over track and trip last month and will strip fitter today but Dawn Dancer is starting to look a little exposed.
Dubai Empire (FR) 8-1 (9-7) Steadied start, held up, headway 3f out, 3rd 2f out, hung right over 1f out, stayed on, no impression on winner, 3rd of 6, 3l behind Rayna's World (9-1) at Leicester 1m 4f hcp (3) hvy in Apr.
Mt Augustus 12-1 (9-5) Tracked leader, led over 1f out, ridden and edged left approaching final furlong, headed inside final furlong, 2nd of 11, 1/2l behind Setting Sail (9-5) at Goodwood 1m 2f mdn stks (3) sft in Sep.
Making Miracles 11-2 (9-7) Towards rear, headway over 3f out, every chance from over 1f out and throughout final furlong, just failed, 2nd of 16, shd behind Baghdad (9-7) at York 1m 4f hcp (4) gf in May.
Dawn Dancer 9-1 (8-9) Slowly into stride, driven forward, soon pulled hard and prominent, led over 8f out, headed 1f out, no extra final furlong, 3rd of 7, 3l behind Mr Reckless (9-3) at Wetherby 1m 2f hcp (4) gs in May.
