Gigginstown’s Elysian Plains was odds-on to make a winning start over hurdles at Roscommon but had to settle for third, finishing 12 lengths behind stablemate Smiling Eliza. He is surely better than that but now has questions to answer now. SUBJUDICE failed to trouble the judge in five runs on the Flat but showed that he wasn’t short of stamina when fifth at Leopardstown. He’s a well-bred individual and a half-brother to two winning hurdlers so gets a speculative vote to come good here. The market will probably tell us all we need to know about the others.
