Another competitive handicap with 20 runners facing the starter for this 1m6f contest and many have claims including the consistent Sergeant Cecil, Mr Ed who is surely better than his much-publicized latest start and Spectrometer who should appreciate the return to this trip but the vote goes to a stable companion of the last mentioned, The Persuader. The son of Sadler's Wells has been in a rich vein of form this summer with wins at Nottingham, York and Beverley and, although he is higher in the weights now and was beaten by Team-Mate at Leicester last time, there may be more to come from the three-year-old, particularly over this trip. The top weights Stage By Stage and Random Quest probably need more help from the handicapper and a bigger threat to the selection is likely to come from the in-form Sergeant Cecil although it remains to be seen whether he can reproduce his best away from Sandown. Tim Easterby's Thewhirlingdervish is better than his latest start at Newmarket would suggest and he is another worthy of a mention along with Marcus Tregoning's Mac, another representing the classic generation. However, it is The Persuader who gets the vote to record a fourth handicap win of the campaign.
