In depth

Verdict

A competitive way to start the build up to the day's main events at Haydock and a race that looks sure to be run at fair pace. Mister McGoldrick, a course winner on the Flat for James Given, has taken well to the winter game and will go through the ground without any problems if he runs true to form. However, Sue Smith's charge is set to race off a 10lb higher mark than his victory at Wetherby last month, and will need to be at the top of his game to follow up here. In contrast, the Mary Reveley-trained Colourful Life races off virtually the same mark and is favoured to reverse the placings today. The seven-year-old also acts when there is plenty of give underfoot and he is taken as his stable's main hope today. With The Phair Crier likely to need the run and the ground going against Volano and Ososhot, Derivative may prove to be the best of the remainder.
