The Martin Todhunter-trained Quarry Island has dropped several hints that a race of this nature is within him and he is selected in preference to Longstone Lass, Blue Leader and Oscar The Boxer in a tricky curtain-raiser to the Doncaster card. The last named hails from a yard that have enjoyed a good run of results this season and Malcolm Jefferson's charge again looks to hold each-way claims in this company. The ground should not be an issue with the six-year-old and he is one to monitor carefully in the betting. So too is Blue Leader, who won a seller in good style at Ludlow eight days ago and is obviously in good heart at present. He is due to go up 10lb from tomorrow and this appears to be a case of the hand being forced into carrying the penalty today. Others make slightly more appeal for win only purposes. Longstone Lass being one, as she is taking her racing well and fared much better than her finishing position would suggest from Wednesday's visit to Wetherby. That was a stronger contest and, assuming that she takes to racing in the visor for the first time, she could be hard to peg back over today's shorter trip. However, Quarry Island has also taken on stiffer opposition this season and, as he is very much favoured by the framing of the weights, he just edges the vote of confidence as a less exposed individual in hurdles.
