In depth

Verdict

Sky Defender won a Class 2 at Epsom and is fortunate to have been left on the same mark after finishing second to Maydanny at the same level at Goodwood so has an obvious chance. Palavecino completed a Polytrack treble and was racing on soft ground at Haydock next time so could do better on this quicker surface. DESERT ICON went up 9lb after landing a Newmarket handicap by 8 lengths and couldn't quite cope in the John Smith's Cup at York though ran well enough to suggest he can get back to winning ways in this. Data Protection wasn't far behind Sky Defender at Goodwood before a comfortable victory when dropped into Class 3 company at Newmarket so could provide the main threat.
