Halcon Genelardais is selected to take the race for the second year in succession; Gungadu, Dream Alliance and Over The Creek join his stablemate Not Left Yet on the shortlist. The selection has taken the same route this season as last year and whilst he has never won off a mark this high, there is no reason that his progression cannot continue this season as he is a lightly-raced seven-year-old. The stable obviously know what it takes to win this race, and having run an eye-catching race over hurdles last time, Halcon Genelardais can return to winning ways and be the first horse since Bonanza Boy to land back-to-back renewals. David Pipe has a lively pair in recent winners Not Left Yet and Over The Creek. The last named won well at Cheltenham last time and his penalty means that he sneaks in near the bottom of the weights, whilst Not Left Yet could run a big race here before a possible crack at the Grand National. The 2005 winner L'Aventure is back in the race and needs respect off his light-weight, whilst Naunton Brook and Baron Windrush have claims for trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies. Sir Rembrandt won well at Cheltenham two starts back, whilst Dream Alliance's recent second to the machine that is Denman puts him firmly in the frame if he stays. Gungadu has won at the track before and looks one to do very well in the big staying races this year. Miko De Beauchene doesn't have the greatest of strike-rate's but he does stay well and Robert Alner's gelding needs respect as he has been aimed at this race for some time. He should have improved for his hurdles run and must enter calculations, however it is Halcon Genelardais who can win once again.
