Verdict

A slightly disappointing turnout for this Novice Stakes race in which the vote goes to Melrose Avenue over Thunderwing. After stepping up from a promising Sandown debut effort to win well at Beverley, the Mark Johnston-trained selection was then found out in Irish Group 2 company. However, back at this level, he has to be seriously entertained. Thunderwing rates an obvious danger as he is progressive, looks to have good attitude and has now won his last two races. Fenrir won his maiden here but his overall form leaves him something to find, but it's hard to split the Mick Channon pair, Mozafin and Rocamadour, the former having the experience and the latter having the promise following his Beverley maiden win. Much as a visor seemed to sharpen Mozafin's act two days ago, Mark Johnston clearly holds Melrose Avenue is some regard and, given that, he gets the nod in this five-runner affair.
