In depth

Verdict

A high-class renewal of this Grade 1. Carriacou won it in 2019 but DOCTEUR DE BALLON was closing on the leaders and still travelling well when unseating his rider. The latter made amends in last year’s delayed race, when Carriacou was only fourth behind placed horses Figuero and Feu Follet, and he ran a very satisfactory prep race here over a shorter trip behind Ajas, ridden today by Rachael Blackmore, with Eddy De Balme and Feu Follet behind. Le Berry easily beat Galleo Conti in a Grade 1 here in November and is now 7-7 over fences but this is the five-year-old’s toughest task to date. General En Chef upset Carriacou in a Listed case here last month but victory in this would be an even bigger surprise and English raider Lord Du Mesnil also looks up against it, though will love conditions having won the Grand National Trial at Haydock in February in the mud.
