Johnny Manziel hopes to be able to restart his NFL career after opening up about his battle with bipolar disorder and depression.

Quarterback Manziel was picked in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns but played in only 15 games before being released two years later.

During that time, Manziel made more headlines for his antics off the field, including a number of arrests, and he now admits his troubles with alcohol stemmed from "self-medicating" to deal with now-diagnosed serious mental health issues.

And Manziel, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2012 as college football's best player, now hopes he can return to a sport which he admits gave him "so much joy".

"The goal of this comeback is to get back to the NFL, ultimately," Manziel said in an interview with ABC News.

"For a while I got so ingrained, caring only about what Johnny wanted, only caring what mattered to me, what made me happy.

"When I look back at it now, even when I thought I was doing what I wanted, I was miserable.

"I am watching all the other guys doing what I want to be doing and I am sitting on a couch being a loser.

"I am coming back from a huge downfall. I don't know what kind of comeback it will be, but I know I want to get back on a football field, to what brought me so much joy in my life."
