Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has become the highest-paid player in NFL history after agreeing a five-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
NFL Network report that terms have been agreed on a contract worth $137.5m - the largest in the history of the NFL based on average amount per year.
The 26-year-old Garoppolo began the 2017 season with the New England Patriots, acting as back-up behind all-time great Tom Brady.
But the 49ers acquired Garoppolo in mid-season for a second-round pick in 2018, and he took over as their starter three weeks later.
San Francisco had won just one game all season when Garoppolo became the quarterback but they proceeded to reel off five wins in succession to finish the season.
The former second-round pick has yet to lose an NFL start and finished the campaign with 1,560 yards and seven touchdowns.
Garoppolo had been scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next month, but the new contract means San Francisco will not have to use the franchise tag in order to retain the highly rated passer.
