Felipe Contepomi kicked five penalties and also converted Martin Rodriguez's try as the Pumas came out on top in a close-fought contest in Verona.
Mirco Bergamasco kicked three penalties and also converted a penalty try for Italy, but it was not quite enough for the home side.
The match had been level at 6-6 at half-time as Contepomi and Bergamasco traded two kicks apiece.
But the match burst into life in the second half as both sides scored a try, with the more accurate boot of Contepomi ultimately proving decisive.
