Jenna Brooks wraps up all the big stories coming out of the NRL as Jarryd Hayne snatches a last-minute victory for the Titans while Cronulla's stumble continues in a round of big upsets.
Hayne stars
Jarryd Hayne landed a last-minute field goal to seal a dramatic one-point victory for the Gold Coast Titans over the Wests Tigers.
It was 18-18 with just eight seconds to go when Hayne slotted home the field goal from 30-metres out to clinch the win.
Hayne has credited his kicking coach while involved with the Fiji sevens team.
"That just goes down to my kicking coach in Jeremy Manning." Hayne admitted, "You couldn't have written the script any better."
Hayne, who also set up a try, played the full 80 minutes at five-eighth.
"It's going to be a tough couple of weeks for me, but each week it gets easier and easier," he said.
Dragons upset Sharks
St George Illawarra produced one of the biggest upsets of the season with a 32-18 win over local rivals Cronulla on Saturday.
Sharks captain Paul Gallen was forced to withdraw from the match after straining his calf in the warm-up.
After the game Gallen said: "We were getting a fair way into the warm-up and I felt a nick in my calf slightly. I had a quick ultrasound and there's a slight tear."
Dragons skipper Gareth Widdop scored 16 points in what was one of their best performances of the season so far.
The loss leaves Cronulla without a win in three games and puts a huge dent in their minor Premiership hopes.
A round of upsets
With only three rounds to go round 23 has thrown the NRL title race wide open after a week of upsets.
Canberra beat the league leaders for the second week in a row after a 22-8 win over Melbourne.
After beating Cronulla last week, the Raiders reclaimed third position and showed that the competition is up for grabs in the process.
Joe Burgess scored two tries in four minutes to help South Sydney end a nine-game losing streak. They beat the Warriors 41-22 in New Zealand.
But it was Adam Reynolds who starred with the boot for the Rabbitohs. The half-back had three first-half try assists through grubbers and he also kicked a field goal to hand his team their first win since May.
The surprises continued on Sunday. The Roosters stunned the Cowboys 22-10. It is the first time the defending champions have lost three games in a row since the third round last year.
Johnathan Thurston seems to still be having issues with his hamstring. The star playmaker suffered the injury three weeks ago, and when asked if he thought his team could win the premiership for a second year in a row he said, "That's the furthest thing from our mind at the moment."
He added: "Finals could be out the back door if we keep going the way we are."
The Roosters' 12-point win means they can't get the wooden spoon this year, as Nathan Brown's Newcastle are now assured to finish bottom of the table.
Rumour mill
There are murmurs suggesting former St Helens full-back Adam Quinlan could return to Super League next season.
The St George Illawarra player, who is out of contract at the end of the year, is believed to be considering offers from the UK.
Elliott Whitehead will be staying in Australia. The former Catalans forward has signed a new deal keeping him in Canberra until the end of the 2018 season.
Whitehead said: "I feel like I have adapted very well to the NRL now. Hopefully I can keep improving as a player and keep helping the team out week, in week out."
