The Betfred Super League season kicked off with a bang with wins for Castleford, St Helens, Catalans, Wigan, Hull FC and Huddersfield.

Each week Brian Carney will cast his eye over the weekend's action and pick the winners and losers from the latest round of rugby league.

Zak Hardaker joins Jon Wells at the touchscreen to give an insight into the Tigers 44-16 win over Leigh

Castleford: This was the stand-out performance of the weekend and I am sure all the other Super League teams took notice. We know all about their potential and I think they really delivered on Friday with some excellent attacking and running rugby.

They have got plenty of flair and showed that - Daryl Powell would have been very pleased with the majority of their defence, the must-improve area for 2017, and will probably put the few tries Leigh scored down to early-season rustiness.

Highlights of the Super League XXII opener between Widnes Vikings and Huddersfield Giants

Rick Stone: There were a few teams who really could not afford to start the season with a loss and Huddersfield were one of them. It was good to see all the hard work Rick Stone has put in paid off against a Widnes side who have a major issue in their halves.

The Giants actually beat and kept Warrington scoreless in their final warm-up game which is no mean feat and getting a win in their opening game will certainly settle the team and take some pressure off them. Their next challenge is on Thursday night against a Salford side who carved out a few chances against Wigan in defeat on Saturday afternoon.

Highlights of the Super league clash between St Helens and Leeds in the opening round of the new Super League season

Theo Fages: Leeds sent a huge amount of traffic his way but the French scrum-half was superb. He did score a try for Saints but it was his defence that really stood out - he made 42 tackles and missed just one.

Highlights of the Betfred Super League match between Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves

Warrington: I was not blown away by the summer signings that Catalans made and really had my doubts about them this season. Warrington should have had more than enough to have put them away, notwithstanding their absentees, and they will be very disappointed by their performance more than the result.

This was just not good enough from the Wolves - a team expected to be challenging at the top of the table. Warrington will get better but there were not many positives to take away from their opening game.

Rhys Evans letting the ball bounce and then throwing a wild offload that led to Richie Myler's try just added to the disjointed feel about their start.

Highlights from Castleford's 44-16 win over Leigh Centurions

Leigh: Or was it? It was certainly an early wake-up call and the Centurions will need to bring plenty more to the table than they did on Friday night against Castleford.

However, I think we can only judge how bad a result it was for Leigh at the end of the season when we see how well Castleford do.

If the Tigers go on and top the table and even win the Grand Final then perhaps we will look back at this result in a different light.

There were some positives from Leigh - they did come back and score some great tries but the game was almost done and dusted by then. There is a fair bit of work to do before their clash against Leeds this Friday, live on Sky Sports. I just wanted to see a little more bite in Leigh's approach. It has served them well in the past.

Leeds attack: I think the Rhinos have a long way to go to recreate the attacking prowess we saw back in 2015. We did see glimpses of what they can do. Kallum Watkins' break was and is all too rare an occurrence for this most gifted of athletes.

When the opposition hold a disciplined line of defence as Saints did they can deal with much of Leeds' offence. Plan B for the Rhinos is yet to be unveiled
