Phil Clarke pays tribute to Huddersfield academy player Ronan Costello, who passed away aged 17 on Tuesday.

It is with great sadness that I attempt to write some words of comfort and support for the family and friends of Ronan Costello. It is an unimaginable experience for them to go through, my thoughts and prayers are with them at this tragic time.

We initially get involved in sport for the fun and friendships that it provides. Then, it starts to teach us the essential life skills of self-discipline, dedication and team work. It becomes a part of our lives and who we are. It's what makes us tick and, more importantly, smile.

After speaking to the people who have spent time with Ronan over the last few years at Huddersfield, it was immediately obvious that both rugby league and his family had helped to provide him with a brilliant start to life. He was honest, respectful and popular.

He knew when to be quiet and listen, and also when to provide some humour. He had fully embraced the lifestyle of a modern day academy sportsman. He was diligent and dedicated to both his college studies and his rugby career.

Sadly, none of us know how long we are going to get on this earth, and for Ronan it wasn't long enough. However, I would feel proud if I was his parents and family because he was a happy and healthy young man who people liked and respected.

I would like to thank Andy Jordan, the Welfare Officer and Richard Thomson, the Chaplain at Huddersfield for the work that they are doing to support everyone through this period. The RFL Benevolent Fund have also assisted and will continue to do so where they can.

Players from both Salford and Huddersfield Academy have received some support and counselling. The game will respect the need for the family to grieve at this time and be there to help in any way possible.

I hope that Ronan is playing rugby league up in heaven.

Rest in Peace.
