Salford owner Dr Marwan Koukash caught up with Brian Carney and hints at a rebrand for the club

Salford owner Marwan Koukash has hinted at a possible rebrand for the Salford Red Devils due to low attendances.

This season has seen a change in fortunes on the field for Salford, after they found themselves battling for their Super League lives in the 'Million Pound Game' against Hull KR back in October.

With 100 seconds left on the clock, the Red Devils were on course for the Championship, needing to claw back an eight-point deficit. However, Niall Evalds' try in the corner made it 18-14 before Greg Johnson touched down to send the game in extra-time. Salford completed the comeback to win the match thanks to Gareth O'Brien's golden-point drop goal.

They now find themselves second in the Betfred Super League table, four points off leaders Castleford, thanks to 12 wins out of the 17 matches played to date, two more than they managed in the whole of last campaign.

Despite this improvement on the pitch, attendance levels at the AJ Bell Stadium have not risen, which has prompted Koukash to assess the options ahead of him and the club.

"This is the best Salford side that we have had for the last 30 years or so but the fans are still not coming here so we have to ask why" he told Sky Sports.

"Is it the stadium or the location of the stadium? But then I looked at the actual figures of the support we have when we played in the Willows and it is not much different to here so that could tell you a story.

"The story is the level of support, no matter what you do, no matter how successful you're not going to get more that 2,500-3,000 Salford fans."

However, Koukash has promised that nothing is set in stone for the club before issuing a plea to fans to stick with the team.

He said: "Right now I'd like to tell all of our fans out there, trust me. We have not made a decision to rebrand. For now I just want to concentrate on getting on with playing good rugby, get behind the team and let's revisit the re-brand at a later date."
