Friday's Betfred Super League match between Wigan and Widnes at the DW Stadium has fallen victim to Storm Doris.

The Warriors have taken the decision to postpone the fixture after heavy rain over the last 24 hours left the pitch in a poor state and unable to sustain two games this weekend. Wigan Athletic play Nottingham Forest in a Sky Bet Championship match on Saturday.

Sky Sports will instead broadcast Warrington's home fixture with Castleford.

Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan said: "With the inclement weather over the last day resulting in intermittent standing water on the pitch and the further forecasted bad weather over the next 24 hours, the DW Stadium pitch simply cannot sustain two games this weekend.

"With Wigan Athletic's season at such a critical stage and after detailed discussions between myself and Wigan Athletic chairman David Sharpe, it was agreed that they need to play this fixture more than we need to play ours.

"Potential for the game to be moved to Sunday was discussed but this simply isn't an option with the pitch in its current state, therefore the game will be rescheduled for later this season.

"We apologise to our fans for the inconvenience and disappointment this causes.

"I too am bitterly disappointed not to be able tomorrow night to welcome our champion team but feel certain that we have made the right decision."

Vikings chief executive James Rule said: "At 6.30pm, I received a call from (Wigan rugby director) Kris Radlinski who informed me that Wigan Athletic and Ian Lenagan had agreed to the postponement of our fixture, due to the condition of their pitch and the importance of Wigan Athletic's upcoming fixture.

"As we have not been involved in any consultation prior to this announcement, we are unable to comment further at this stage. We will do so in due course."
