Super League: Best of Round 2

Jimmy Keinhorst's hat-trick helped Leeds secure a hard-fought victory at Elland Road.

What a start we have enjoyed to the 2018 Super League season. It never fails to deliver for us!

Round 2's action kicked off on Thursday night, as we saw defending champions Leeds edge a spirited Hull KR side and Huddersfield secure a first win of the campaign at home to Warrington.

On Friday, Wakefield survived a late Salford comeback to hold on for victory, while Saturday morning saw Wigan defeat Hull down under.

St Helens kept their good start to the season going on Saturday with a victory in France, while Cas pipped Widnes to the points in Sunday's offering!

Highlights from Wakefield's victory over Salford at the Mobile Rocket Stadium

On Friday night, Wakefield and Salford were involved in a clash, live on Sky Sports, which went down to the very final kick of the game.

Trinity had held an 8-0 lead at the break courtesy of an early try from Scott Grix and the boot of Liam Finn, but the Red Devils roared back into it through Robert Lui and Niall Evalds tries to level proceedings at 8-8 with 25 minutes still to play.

Chris Chester's side struck next as Ryan Hampshire's kick forward landed directly into Jacob Miller's hands to touch down and Finn made sure of the extra two.

Gareth O'Brien missed an 80th minute conversion attempt to salvage a draw for Salford

Just when it seemed as if Wakefield would hold on for the win, however, Kris Welham spun over in the corner in the last minute of play and set up Gareth O'Brien with a final shot at goal for a draw.

But his effort just skewed wide. What drama!

Luke Gale's drop-goal proved all important in securing Castleford's first win of Super League XXIII against Widnes

Castleford were well-beaten at St Helens on the opening weekend, 46-6, and headed into their home clash with Widnes on Sunday under a hefty bit of pressure.

For the second Mend-A-Hose Jungle match in succession - you have to go back to last year's drama-infused semi-final against St Helens for the last game - Luke Gale popped up with, what turned out to be, a match-winning drop goal.

His effort proved just enough for the Tigers come full-time, as they overcame the Vikings by a single point, 13-12.

Jimmy Keinhorst scored a hat-trick for Leeds in their 20-11 victory over Hull KR

Having plundered a hat-trick past Hull KR on Thursday, Leeds' Jimmy Keinhorst takes our player of the round place for this week.

Having failed to make the Rhinos' Grand Final team last year, Keinhorst was also left out of their opening match of this year against Warrington.

Indeed, he only ended up playing against Hull KR because of an injury to team-mate Joel Moon which forced Brian McDermott into a late reshuffle.

What a way to make a statement. Could Keinhorst's performance now give him a starting berth in the World Club Challenge on Friday?

What were they thinking?

Morgan Knowles is red carded for a dangerous tackle in St Helens' 21-12 away victory over Catalans

Despite St Helens' 21-12 away victory over Catalans in Perpignan, the game also contained a moment of madness from Morgan Knowles.

In the 52nd minute, Knowles was shown a red card for a dangerous dump tackle on Thibaut Margalet, reducing Saints to 12 men.

Two minutes later the numbers were temporarily evened up as Catalans' Benjamin Jullien was sent to the sin-bin for a dangerous tackle on Jonny Lomax, while Knowles' card ultimately did not prove costly in terms of the result for St Helens.

But it's still worthy of a: 'what were you thinking Morgan?!'

Fair play to Baz and everyone else who braved Wakefield v Salford from the Mobile Rocket Stadium on Friday night!

Wigan's gamble in taking a Super League match outside Europe for the first time paid off as they beat Hull FC 24-10 in Wollongong, Australia.
