St Helens v Leeds Rhinos: Two key Super League battles

Kallum Watkins is caught by St Helens' Matty Dawson

It's sixth v 10th in Super League on Friday and after 11 rounds of the season, no one would have expected those two sides to be St Helens and Leeds.

The champions visit Langtree Park with just three wins under their belt, but one of those came in the reverse fixture at Headingley.

Will St Helens exact revenge? Here are two key head-to-heads:

Luke Walsh v Jordan Lilley

Two in-form half backs go up against each other, but there's certainly a contrast in experience between the pair.

Keiron Cunningham has confirmed St Helens are looking to extend Luke Walsh's contract. The scrum-half is into his third year in Super League but his deal runs out at the end of 2016. On this season's evidence, the Australian is well worth an extension.

Keiron Cunningham and Matty Dawson are relishing how competitive the Super League is this season

We've highlighted Walsh's defence as a weakness before, but he more than makes up for any tackling deficiencies through his attacking game. He has got the most try assists in St Helens colours with 11, five more than any other team-mate.

Walsh is important with the boot, putting in 63 attacking kicks so far, and he's also capable of getting over the whitewash too - just look at his magical individual try against Catalans last Thursday that got St Helens back into the game before half-time.

So will Walsh and the St Helens attack fire on Friday?

As for Leeds, the highlight of their performance against Hull FC was 19-year-old scrum-half Jordan Lilley. He scored a vital try, kicked four goals and suffered a bloody nose for his troubles in guiding the Rhinos to just their third win of the season.

In a disappointing campaign where several of Leeds' top players have underperformed, Lilley has stuck his hand up to be counted. He has made the most of Danny McGuire's injury-hit campaign to establish his name on Brian McDermott's team sheet.

Lilley's two try assists and 16 attacking kicks rank well in terms of Rhinos numbers, while he has also kicked 14 goals, assuming the responsibility with the tee after both Zak Hardaker and Liam Sutcliffe failed to nail down that job as their own.

The young half-back has been one of the shining lights of a disappointing season so far for the Rhinos, so can he continue his form come Friday night?

Jon Wilkin v Jamie Jones-Buchanan

There is a battle at loose forward between two Super League veterans who have faced off on many occasions.

St Helens need Jon Wilkin at his best. The captain is leading a side struggling for consistency at the moment, but there's certainly been no backward step from the skipper. He leads the way in defence with 388 tackles, even ahead of James Roby who has topped the figures for the last two seasons.

Wilkin has alternated between the second row and loose forward in 2016 but he has packed down in the latter position for the last four games. His all-round game is a big part of Keiron Cunningham's blueprint, with Wilkin providing six try assists and making four clean breaks in attack to go alongside his excellent work in defence.

St Helens need their captain leading from the front against Leeds, so expect Wilkin to be topping those figures once more on Friday night.

Jamie Jones-Buchanan drew praise from Brian McDermott after he scored the crucial try against Hull FC by crashing over late on, and he has played an important part in the Rhinos pack since his return from that lengthy injury.

The 34-year-old started six games in a row in the loose forward position and has already worked his way up to the top of the tackling charts, rating just behind Adam Cuthbertson so far with 278 hits. Impressive, considering he's played two games less than his Australian team-mate. JJB has also made 103 carries for 690 metres, averaging 6.7m a drive.

Penalties conceded are an issue - indeed he's also second on that list, having given away eight so far this season - but Brian McDermott could do with more of the blood and thunder we've seen so far from one of his most experienced campaigners as the Rhinos look to begin their assault on the Super 8s.
