Hull KR recorded an unlikely 36-10 win over Warrington in their Super League clash at the KC Lightstream Stadium on Friday night.
There were six tries from the home side, who almost went the entire first half without scoring before nabbing two quick tries to go into the break with the lead, and they refused to relent it throughout the second period as they tormented the visiting team all evening.
It was a masterclass of kicking from Albert Kelly and a superb counter-attacking performance from man of the match Kieran Dixon as the Rovers kept their hopes for a top-eight finish alive.
The two sides were not helped by the rain that arrived at kick-off, but it didn't stop either set of players from giving the ball plenty of width in attack.
The first try came from ineffective defence from the home side right on their line. On the 10-minute mark Daryl Clark charged down an attempted kick which gave his side the ball deep inside Hull KR territory.
Ashton Sims took the ball and drew the defenders before Chris Hill ran a good line just off his shoulder for the opening score of the game.
Warrington appeared to be content to shut the half out, but Ken Sio received the ball on the edge of the right hand side and showed enough pace to leave the cover defence behind before stepping Stefan Ratchford and scoring in the corner with four minutes remaining.
Josh Mantellato failed to convert the effort but managed to get himself on the scoreboard before the half was up.
Albert Kelly hoisted a high kick that was fielded by Joel Monaghan who was hit almost immediately by Kris Welham. The tackle rattled Monaghan, who spilled the ball. Rovers scooped the ball up and the supporting Mantellato dived over for the try which he also converted for a 10-6 lead going into the break.
It was the home side who stamped their mark on the second half first, as Kieron Dixon accelerated superbly into a gap before changing direction and accelerating again to score under the poles.
Laim Salter and Tyrone McCarthy then scored tries as Hull KR pulled further away.
There was a well-worked try from the visitors, when Gene Ormsby went over for his side’s lone try of the second half, but it was far too little, and a final try from Kris Welham sealed their fate with a 36-10 win for Hull KR.
