The Scouting Combine represents a chance for the best of college football to showcase their athletic abilities and put themselves in contention for a career in the NFL - here's five who have done their hopes no harm after a  week in Indianapolis.

We know they can play, they've spent all year and more doing so for their college teams across the country, but the Combine tests all sorts of aspects of a player.

As well as their ability to leap, run very, very fast and catch or throw a football, the players are interviewed by teams and stand up in press conferences in front of the massed ranks of the NFL media.

All the details that can add up to finding a very special talent, whether the players has been touted as a first or second pick or makes a charge to come from nowhere, the Combine will define many teams plans for Free Agency as they first see the skills of those that will be coming through in April's draft.

All you need to know about the NFL's scouting week

New San Francisco 49ers general manager described DeShone Kizer as "blowing the doors off" in his interview, John Ross set a new Combine record in the 40-yard dash and London-born Obi Melifonwu emerged onto several radars with his athletic ability but was it enough?

We take a look at those who we could be hearing a lot more of in the coming weeks....

It's an obvious one, but if anything the expected No 1 pick in April's Draft rubber-stamped the belief that his all-round ability and explosiveness mean he will be first off the board in Philadelphia.

Described by NFL.com's respected analyst Bucky Brooks as the best player available in his latest mock draft, the Texas A&M defensive end was short-listed for the Lombardi and Hendrinks Awards as the best college defender, as a sophomore.

Standing 6ft 5in, his athletic prowess is obvious and a vertical jump of 41in underlined that, his leap 2.5in more than Odell Beckham Jr, but then in an interview with the NFLs' Move the Sticks podcast his old basketball coach revealed he could have made a career in that sport too.

Coupled with the second best bench press among defensive lineman and a confidence exuded in front of the media and team officials, you could say he aced it.

Cleveland pick first in the draft and while they are desperate for a quarterback, they are equally desperate for good football players. Garrett is that and the Draft confirmed he has the skills to succeed.

Obi Melifonwu (Safety), Connecticut

40-yard dash - 4.40secs; Bench Press - 17 reps; Vertical Jump - 44in; Broad Jump - 144in

London-born so very much on the radar of UK fans, who saw Jay Ajayi make his mark with the Miami Dolphins in the NFL last year.

Despite four years as a starting safety for UConn, he may not have been too far up many boards ahead of the Draft, but his speed and skills meant he was always one to watch at Lucas Oil stadium.

His broad jump of 144in is the second biggest since 2003 behind Byron Jones mark of two years ago, while his vertical jump of 44in sits joint third in the all-time standings.

At 6ft 4in and with a rangy skill-set, he was seen as a potential early second rounder at the Draft. However, after such a display of athleticism and explosiveness, there will be many scouts sifting through plenty of game tape to determine whether he can make the transition to NFL player and perhaps the first round.

Jabrill Peppers (Strong Safety), Michigan

40-yard dash - 4.46secs; Bench Press - 17 reps; Vertical Jump - 35 1/2in; Broad Jump - 128in

Like Garrett, Peppers has been long talked about as first-round prospect, but being ranked anywhere between 7 and 32 in NFL.com's mock drafts perhaps underlined the blurred lines over his position.

The Heisman Trophy finalist played as a defensive lineman, despite his size having also impressed from the backfield in his preferred position - he wore an LB throughout the Combine and worked out in two sets of drills.

Some analysts have suggested he may be better suited to wide receiver in the NFL, he ran a 40-yard dash faster than Antonio Brown with a 10-yard split faster than DeSean Jackson and a vertical jump an inch higher than AJ Green.

However, in a confident display in front of the microphones he left no one in any doubt: "What do I look like? I'm a safety" - perhaps unsurprisingly he posted the fasted time of any linebacker and a time faster than Kansas Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry.

After a successful Combine, it seems more likely than ever he will go first round and the team that takes him will have a decision to make on a position but not on an all-round football talent.

John Ross (Wide receiver), Washington

40-yard dash - 4.22secs; Vertical Jump - 37in; Broad Jump - 133in

When someone breaks a record at the Combine you take notice, when that record is the blue riband four-yard dash, everyone takes notice.

On Saturday Washington's Ross broke the internet, or social media at least with a record-breaking 4.22, beating Chris Johnson's record of 4.24 seconds set in 2008.

He may have missed out on his own island - Adidas had offered anyone wearing their Adizero 5-star 40 cleats that possibility - Ross wore his own Nike footwear, but his run is likely to have cleared the way for the chance to buy his own island himself.

After catching 81 passes for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns in his junior season at Washington, Ross was already a bright prospect and his speed will have alerted the top end of the Draft.

He cramped up and didn't run a second attempt, not that he needed to, and will undergo shoulder surgery, but his blistering run ensure that his Pro Day is likely to be a packed affair.

OJ Howard (Tight End), Alabama

6ft 6in O.J. Howard is likely to be the top tight end in April's draft

40-yard dash - 4.51secs; Bench Press - 22 reps; Vertical Jump - 30in; Broad Jump - 121in; 3-cone drill - 6.85secs; 20-yard shuttle - 4.16secs; 6-yard shuttle - 11.46secs

Rob Gronkowski has set a new benchmark for NFL tight ends and the 2017 draft class bears testimony to that and OJ Howard could be the pick of the bunch.

Almost certain to go in the first round, his performances in Indianapolis look to have have edged him up the boards of many seeking a difference-maker in the position.

At 6ft 6in and just over 250lbs, Howard was never going to just slip by especially after his starring role in Senior Bowl week and he did not disappoint.

His 40-yard dash was the second best in the tight end class, but the biggest ever by a man of his size, and his three-cone drill was the best of the 2017 tight ends.

Miami's David Njoku and Iowa's George Kittle are also in the frame as early tight end picks, but Howard looks to have wrapped up his status as the most exciting prospect in the position.
