Washington receiver John Ross III set a new record in the 40-yard dash by running a blistering time of 4.22 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Ross completed the feat on his first attempt, breaking Chris Johnson's record of 4.24 seconds in 2008.

However, Ross missed out on the chance to win his own island by wearing Nike shoes during his run.

In the build-up to the combine, Adidas offered an island to any prospect who broke the 40-yard dash record while wearing Adizero 5-Star 40 cleats. The offer included the caveat that an island would be awarded "as soon as reasonably possible" or that the company could pay the prospect $1m instead.

According to ESPN, the newly-crowned fastest player in the NFL signed was signed by Nike shortly after his run.

Ross appeared to hurt his left while winding down during his run. The NFL Network reported that he wouldn't do any more drills during the workout because of sore calves.

Ross told the league's television network he "got tight at the end" and declined to run his second attempt.

He also revealed earlier in the week he is set to undergo shoulder surgery on March 14.

The 22-year-old was already viewed as a likely first-round selection in next month's draft after catching 81 passes for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns in his junior season at Washington.

Saturday's record-setting run will boost his draft stock further and capped a remarkable year for Ross, who missed the 2015 season after suffering a torn ACL during a spring practice earlier that year.

"I'm just thankful beyond measure, blessed, and just really happy to be in this situation," Ross told the NFL Network. "Because two years ago, I was sitting on the couch for the whole season, torn ACL, and now to be in this position, I'm really thankful."
