It had been a rumour all season, but last week the Los Angeles Rams announced they had signed head coach Jeff Fisher to a two-year extension.

On their 'Inside the Huddle' podcast, Sky Sports NFL experts Neil Reynolds and Jeff Reinebold discussed the extensions given to Fisher and Rams general manager Les Snead.

"If you base it solely on performance - and we often say it's a performance-based business - then it's a real head-scratcher," Jeff said.

"Let's look at the Jeff Fisher formula, when he was successful with the Titans. Big running back, pound the ball, control time of possession and play great defence. You can't see that in this Los Angeles Rams team."

In his 21st season as an NFL head coach, the Rams are 4-8 and guaranteed to finish no better than 8-8. Fisher has just six winning seasons over his career, and with 163 defeats, he is two losses away from the most career losses in NFL history.

In a highly competitive market, with the potential of another NFL team moving to the city in the near future, Jeff said that the Rams were in danger of losing fans.

"What are you saying to this fanbase, and this team? That mediocrity is OK?

"LA is one of the most saturated sports markets in the United States. You can't afford to promote mediocrity, and that's effectively what they're doing."

"He's a great, personable guy, but the reputation doesn't match the record," said Neil. "Even Fisher said himself on Hard Knocks that they wouldn't go 7-9 again, but this is what they are.

"He's never had a winning season with the Rams, and that's why I would love to know the details of this contract."
