Midway through his round Oakmont leader Johnson was told that officials would be reviewing the incident when his ball moved on the green at the fifth, and he could be subject to a one-shot penalty.
USGA chief Mike Davis confirmed that all the other players still on the course were made aware of the situation and while the Sky Sports commentary team expressed their surprise, the great and good of the golfing world were quick to have their say on social media, led by McIlroy.
Johnson went on to claim the title, his first major championship, but the debate continued continued to rage while Johnson was eventually penalised a stroke for the incident.
The Northern Irishman tweeted: This is ridiculous....No penalty whatsoever for DJ. Let the guy play without this in his head.
The world No 3 followed up with: This isn't right for anyone of that golf course. If it was me I wouldn't hit another shot until this farce was rectified.
Defending champion Spieth was also quick to join the debate adding his thoughts on Twitter: Lemme get this straight..DJ doesn't address it. It's ruled that he didn't cause it to move. Now you tell him he may have? Now? This is a joke?
The American added after Johnson claimed the title: DJ took the high road to take that penalty. This ordeal cannot be overlooked because of a multiple shot victory.
Rickie Fowler also joined in the Twitter discussion: @JordanSpieth @Rory McIlroy w/you boys! The fact that the @usga thinks that DJ caused the ball to move is completely ridiculous! Laughable!
Ernie Els too was quick to have his say: @USGA treatment of @DJohnsonPGA absolutely shocking. No way he made the ball move.
Sky Sports expert and Ryder Cup winning captain Paul McGinley also tweeted: USGA not helping DJ - he needs clarity at this stage of the round not doubt as to the ruling.
Former world number one Luke Donald was another to come out in support of Johnson: This is so simple, yet the @usga is making it so convulted. Only way ball can move backwards is if DJ grounded his putter. He didn't.
And Keegan Bradley added a couple of tweets to the debate, firstly tweeting: Wow @USGA Wow.
Before adding: These are the guys who make our rules? #scary
