Justin Rose sent the galleries scurrying for cover when he shanked his fairway bunker escape on the 72nd hole of The Memorial, but one unfortunate man did not hear the cries of "fore".
Rose needed a par at the last to force a play-off with David Lingmerth, but he blocked his three-wood from the tee into sand on the right and, as he explained to Jack Nicklaus afterwards: "I tried to lean on an eight-iron and it came right out of the socket".
His ball headed way right of the green and cracked the unlucky spectator on the side of the head, knocking him to the ground to the shock of his fellow patrons.
A clearly shaken Rose made straight for the stricken gentleman to check on his condition, and he was delighted to see him sitting up and making light of the situation.
To his credit, Rose regained his composure and played a sublime pitch to four feet before converting the putt to tie Lingmerth at the top of the leaderboard on 15 under par.
And before heading back to the 18th tee for the play-off, Rose made sure the spectator had a signed glove to ease the pain of his headache.
