Tiger Woods refused to speak to the media after crashing out of contention at the Players Championship following a third-round 75 at TPC Sawgrass.

The former world number one posted multiple double-bogeys at par-fives in the same round for the first time in his career, taking seven shots to negotiate both the second and the ninth in an erratic outward 40.

Woods had made the cut with nothing to spare after holing a 10-foot putt for birdie at his final hole on Friday, and he insisted afterwards that anybody who made the weekend had a chance to win as he began his third round eight shots off the lead.

But his chances started to disappear with a shocking drive at the second, his ball clattering into a tree and travelling just over 100 yards, and he took four more shots just to reach the putting surface.

The 39-year-old dropped another shot at the sixth before taking advantage of a rare straight drive at the next and making a birdie, but he then suffered a recurrence of the short-game problems that blighted him following his return to action after back surgery late last year.

Woods fluffed two attempted flop-shots from short of the ninth green and eventually pitched on and two-putted for his second seven of the front nine.

He did manage to steady his slide over the inward half, picking up a welcome birdie at the long 11th and parring the final seven holes to remain at three over par for the tournament.

But being tied for 69th out of the 75 players who survived the cut, Woods will be playing for pride over the final 18 holes.
