Rory McIlroy feels like he has given himself a chance of ending his 18-month winless run on the PGA Tour after moving up the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
McIlroy, without a victory since the 2016 Tour Championship, carded a five-under 67 at Bay Hill to get within two strokes of 54-hole leader Henrik Stenson.
The Northern Irishman posted a close-range birdie at the fourth and rolled in from 12 feet at the ninth, before bouncing back from bogeying the 11th to eagle the next and pick up two shots over his final three holes.
"I started the day just outside the top 10 and wanted to at least give myself a chance going into tomorrow, so it was a great day out there," McIlroy said.
"I can't really ask for much more. I got it up-and-down when I needed to and I took advantage of some of the good shots I hit."
Ryan Moore is a further stroke back from McIlroy in tied-fourth alongside Justin Rose, who also carded a five-under 67 to bolster his chances of a fourth worldwide win in 11 starts.
"I kind of knew I needed something pretty good today to keep pace with the leaders," Rose said. "When I made a couple birdies around 12 and 13 I was really playing myself into the tournament for tomorrow."
