Rory McIlroy won’t be defending his FedExCup title at this week’s Tour Championship, a year on from snatching the $10million jackpot in dramatic fashion.

The world No 8 failed to qualify for the season-ending finale at East Lake, finishing the 2017 PGA Tour campaign 58th in the standings, having topped the table 12 months ago.

McIlroy ended the regular season in 36th spot but won the Deutsche Bank Championship to head to Atlanta sixth in the standings, knowing another victory would give him chance of topping the PGA Tour list.

The four-time major champion posted rounds of 68 and 70 to stay within five strokes of midway leader Dustin Johnson, before a four-under 66 on Saturday moved him within two of the lead.

After reaching the turn in 34, McIlroy posted back-to-back birdies from the 10th before reigniting his hopes with a hole-out eagle at the par-four 16th.

A closing birdie closed a joint-low round-of-the-day 64 and saw McIlroy progress into a three-way play-off alongside Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell, who was eliminated at the first extra hole.

McIlroy lipped out for eagle at the first additional hole to match Moore's birdie, with the pair exchanging pars over the next two holes to extend the contest.
